We adopted Daisy in January of 2006 when she was 3 months old. At the time she was 15 pounds. She has since grown to 47 pounds and will be celebrating her first birthday in October. Our other dog, Shelby, is a purebred Labrador Retriever. We knew we wanted a second dog but were unsure whether to adopt or again purchase from a breeder. My father manages an animal shelter in my hometown, so I know how many abandoned and unwanted dogs there are in the world. In the end, we decided to adopt from Lab Rescue of Greater Richmond. It was a great decision! Daisy has been a wonderful addition to our family. My black Lab, Shelby, adores having a sister. Shelby is very spoiled and is treated like our child, so it took her some time to learn to share her toys. But she and Daisy have bonded well. They often nap together in the same kennel, despite each having their own. Daisy has brought the life back to my dog Shelby, who now has a permanent playmate. We recently took "the Girls" on vacation to the Shennandoah Valley. They had a great time learning about the outdoors, especially fish and ducks. They spent time swimming in the river and loved it! They attend a Doggie Day Camp near our house several times per month and on occasion, go swimming at the Old Towne Pet Resort's indoor dog pool in Springfield. Did I mention they are spoiled?! The Girls will be taking their first cross country road trip this Christmas to see our families in the Midwest. For those of you considering getting a dog for the first time, it is a very rewarding experience and a lesson to humans as to what constitutes unconditional love. No matter how bad your day has gone, they will always be happy to see you and will always make you smile. Thank you Lab Rescue of Greater Richmond for helping us to expand and enrich our family!
